LONDON, England -- Tottenham captain Robbie Keane must serve a three-match ban after failing to overturn his sending off in last Sunday's Premier League home defeat against Birmingham.

Dimitar Berbatov, left, pleads with referee Dowd after Keane, right, is given is given his marching orders.

"The club can confirm that the appeal against Robbie Keane's red card for serious foul play has been rejected," said Tottenham said on their Web site.

The 27-year-old Keane, who scored twice in the match, was red-carded for his challenge on Fabrice Muamba as Spurs crashed to a 3-2 loss after a stunning strike from Sebastian Larsson in time added on.

Tottenham had argued Keane's dismissal was harsh and that referee Phil Dowd had consulted with the fourth official before producing the red card.

Keane will sit out Premier League games against Manchester City at home and Portsmouth away plus a Carling Cup quarterfinal against City.

But the Republic of Ireland marksman will be available for the north London derby away to Arsenal on December 22. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
