Benzema double buries Rangers bid

LONDON, England -- Teenage star Karim Benzema scored twice in three minutes to condemn Rangers to the UEFA Cup as Lyon beat them to a Champions League last-16 place with an emphatic 3-0 victory at Ibrox.

Sidney Govou gave Lyon the lead after 15 minutes as the French champions went all out to avenge their earlier 3-0 home defeat by the Scottish hopes.

Rangers needed only a draw to join Barcelona in the next stage from Group E -- and they were left rueing a glaring 79th minute miss by Jean Claude Darcheville.

Barry Ferguson set up a glorious chance for the Frenchman, but his six-meter shot front in front of goal hit the bar and flew over. Darchville was then dismissed in the final minute as his frustrations surfaced.

Turkish hopes Fenerbahce snatched the runners-up slot in Group G with a 3-1 home victory over CSKA Moscow while 10-man PSV Eindhoven slumped to a 1-0 home defeat against Inter who had already won the section.

After missing a good chance in the third minute, Govou was on hand to drive home the opener from 10 meters at Ibrox after Allan McGregor had parried an angled drive from Benzema.

Walter Smith fielded a cautious 4-5-1 line-up for Rangers' crunch tie that was worth around six million pounds to the winners.

Lyon should have taken the lead in the third minute when skipper Juninho's first-time pass inside Ibrox right-back Alan Hutton put the jet-heeled Govou through on goal.

The Lyon wide-man beat keeper Allan McGregor with his low, angled drive from 12 meters but to the relief of the home support, the ball went the wrong side of the post.

Rangers luck ran out and with six minutes to go Lyon sent a free-kick into the box and Benzema fired between the legs of McGregor from 15 meters.

He helped himself to his second of the night three minutes later with a shot from the edge of the box.

CSKA took a surprise lead on the half-hour in Turkey when Caner Erkin crossed low from the left and Edu diverted the ball past his keeper for an own goal.

Two minutes later Fenerbahce were level. Brazilian Alex seized on a clearance and unleashed a superb volley past Igor Akinfeev into the top corner.

Fenerbahce snatched the lead in time added on at the end of the first half when Alex slid the ball into the path of Ugur Boral who marked his Champions League debut by firing past the keeper at his near-post.

A 90th minute goal confirmed Fenerbahce's place in the December 21 draw as a looping header by Boral from Mehmet Aurélio's deep cross rounded off a great night.

PSV were reduced to 10 men after 28 minutes against the Italians when Edison Mendez is red-carded for brining down David Suazo as he heads for goal.

Inter finally made the breakthroughbreak after 64 minutes. A long ball releases David Suazo who jinks past Carlos Salcido and Timmy Simons before cutting the ball back for Julio Cruz to apply the easiest of finishes for his 18th UEFA Champions League goal. E-mail to a friend
