LONDON, England -- Newcastle and England midfielder Joey Barton will spend the start of the New Year in jail after being refused bail when he appeared in court in Liverpool on Friday on charges of common assault and affray.

Barton has made limited appearances for his new club after his summer move.

Barton, who missed his team's Premier League game against Wigan on Boxing Day due to an ankle injury, was arrested after an incident in Liverpool city center in the early hours of Thursday morning.

He was remanded in custody until January 3 and will miss Saturday's match at Chelsea and the visit to Tyneside of his former club Manchester City on Wednesday.

Two others were also held in connection with the same incident.

Andrew Barton, 19, from Widnes, has been charged with actual bodily harm and affray.

Nadine Wilson, 27, from Huyton, Merseyside, is charged with common assault and affray.

Neither appeared in court on Friday and have been bailed to appear next month.

Barton, who grew up in the Liverpool suburb of Huyton, is believed to have visited the north-west England city for a night out.

His performances last season while playing for Manchester City led to an England call up and he has one full cap to his name.

He joined Newcastle in the summer in a $12 million deal but has missed much of the season through injury. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
