NEWPORT, Wales -- Bradley Dredge and European Tour rookie Martin Kaymer each shot four-under 65 on Saturday to share a one-stroke third-round lead in the Wales Open. Kaymer bogeyed the last two holes to join Dredge at 10-under 197 on the Roman Road course. Second-round leader Mads Vibe-Hastrup (68) and Richard Sterne (64) are equal third. Having turned professional just 18 months ago, Kaymer won twice on the Challenge Tour last year to qualify for the European Tour. "Things have gone very fast since then," Kaymer said. "I have always dreamed of playing on the European Tour and now I am doing it, playing great tournaments on great golf courses." The 22-year-old German made six birdies with his putter-- including two from 30 feet -- before landing in the bunker with his drive on the 17th and hitting over the green at the last. Dredge, who lost in a play-off last month as Padraig Harrington became the first Irishman in 25 years to win the Irish Open, is trying to become the first Welsh winner in the eight editions of the Wales Open. "Padraig said the Irish Open was his most important event after the four majors," Dredge said. "I agree. You always want to win your national Open. I'll be trying my very best. I really want to win this." Soren Kjeldsen (64), Gary Murphy (66), David Frost (67) and Paul Broadhurst (67) are a further shot back at eight-under 199. Michael Campbell, the 2005 U.S. Open champion, shot a 69 to share 15th place, while former champion and joint first-round leader Paul Lawrie dropped to 38th after a 71. Colin Montgomerie (72) is nine shots off the pace. "Four three-putts. I don't know what to do," said a disconsolate Montgomerie. . ![]() Kaymer won twice on the Challenge Tour lat year. |
