Sydney's Mardi Gras (a four week long festival held in February/March each year) is world-famous, but the city hosts a plethora of other events that could enhance your trip, including:

Sculptures by the Sea
(held each November between Bondi and Tamarama beaches)

Sydney Biennale Arts Festival
(next in 2008)

Good Vibrations Festival
(2007 lineup includes the Beastie Boys, Nightmares on Wax and Timo Maas)

Sydney Big Day Out
(2007 lineup includes Muse, the Killers, Kasabian and the Streets)

If you're planning a late night, be aware that Sydney's taxi shift swaps over at 3 am, making it notoriously hard to get a cab between 2:30 am and 3:30 am.

In summer, catch a film at the outdoor Moonlight Cinema. Movies are shown in a natural amphitheater -- take a picnic and dine while you watch under the stars. Film buffs visiting in winter might want to schedule their visit around Sydney Film Festival, in June.

Sydney's as laid-back a city as you'll find, but if you fancy escaping for an afternoon, charter a water taxi and head out to one of the islands in Sydney Harbor for a picnic: you'll need to book a place with the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
