(CNN) -- As the founder and chairman of America's Research Group, C. Britt Beemer has made a career of studying and analyzing the seemingly erratic behavior of consumers.

"We give businesses a direction that's designed to better serve their customer," he said of his business, which he founded in 1979. "When you better serve your customer, both the retailer wins, and the customer gets better service."

The Charleston, South Carolina-based company provides tailored research on consumers and marketing to all types of companies -- home furnishing, appliances and electronics, finance and mass retail -- across the United States.

"We try to analyze every element in that buying and shopping experience. We tell our clients what they need to do to do a better job. For example, we beat our clients over the head to make sure there are enough cash registers open, that there are people to wait on customers," Beemer told CNN.

In its attempt to determine how, when and why consumers select their products, the company has interviewed up to 8,000 to 15,000 people in one week. Beemer's own expertise lies in not only setting up these surveys, designing questionnaires and constructing samples, but also in the analysis and interpretation of the survey results.

In addition to his role as the lead in research for ARG, Beemer said he travels about three to four days a week, sometimes visiting a different city each day, as he presents market strategies, gives speeches and meets with clients.

His work has appeared on CNN, in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and Investors Business Daily.

He also is the author of "Predatory Marketing," and "It Takes a Prophet to Make a Profit."

Prior to his career as a nationally acclaimed marketing strategist, he was a manager or consultant on 16 congressional and senatorial campaigns.

Beemer lives in Orlando, Florida, with his wife and two daughters.
