It was the second day of the massive 2002 Hayman wildfire that charred nearly 138,000 acres just outside Denver, Colorado, destroying more than 100 homes and sending 8,000 fleeing for safety.

Douglas County Undersheriff Tony Spurlock picked up his phone. Officials from the Colorado Attorney General's Office told him state fire officials needed his help.
