SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) -- Two earthquakes rocked northern Chile early Thursday, but authorities said no victims or damage were reported.
The first quake hit at 2:35 a.m. with a preliminary magnitude of 4.9 and epicenter in the Pacific Ocean off the port city of Mejillones, 768 miles (1,250 kilometers) north of Santiago, according to the Seismological Institute of the University of Chile.
The second earthquake struck at 4:23 a.m. with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
The epicenter was about 45 miles (70 kilometers) north of the northern city of Antofagasta and 720 miles (1,155 kilometers) north of the capital, Santiago, the USGS said.
