Editor's note Deng Yaping joins "Talk Asia" on shows airing August 11-12.
(CNN) -- Deng Yaping is a sporting legend in China, winning four Olympic gold medals and 14 world championships in China's "national ball" -- table tennis. Deng was voted Chinese female athlete of the century, holding the record for winning the most titles and keeping the world No. 1 spot for seven years.
Deng retired early at the age of 24 to work on what she believes is an even bigger and more meaningful challenge -- promoting sport in China and promoting China to the world. She has represented Chinese athletes as the image ambassador for Beijing's bid for the 2008 Olympics, and is currently in charge of the Olympic Village.
Deng joins Talk Asia to discuss the importance of the Olympics for China and its athletes and explains why sport is such a source of national pride for China. E-mail to a friend
