Coalition forces have been fighting Taliban-led militants in Afghanistan.

The fighting occurred in the Maka Khan district of Paktika province, where troops targeted compounds.

"During the course of operations, several armed militants threatened the force and were engaged and killed," the coalition said in a statement.

"A weapons cache consisting of AK-47s, rocket-propelled grenades, mortar rounds and hand grenades was also found in the area."

Four people were detained, one of whom was wounded.

Also on Friday, NATO's International Security Assistance Force said Afghan and NATO soldiers "killed a number of Taliban" insurgents" in fighting "during a failed attack on their patrol base" in southern Afghanistan on Tuesday.

Soldiers at Forward Operating Base Arnhem in the Hyderabad area in central Helmand province "were engaged by a number of enemy fighters from four separate firing points with small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades," ISAF said.

Troops "repelled the attack using small arms and heavy weapons, engaging a number of compounds housing enemy fighters" and called in air support. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
