5 arrested under UK terror laws

LONDON, England (CNN) -- British police early Tuesday arrested five men in raids across northern England, under the country's terrorism act, police said.

According to Scotland Yard, two arrests were carried out in Halifax, West Yorkshire, at a pair of residences.

Police were searching four addresses in West Yorkshire, as well as one in north London.

Scotland Yard said the West Yorkshire arrests were part of "an intelligence-led operation" that fell under the Terrorism Act 2000.

"The men, aged 29 and 25, were arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism," the statement from London's Metropolitan police said. They were expected to be brought to a central London police station later in the day.

In a separate operation, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) arrested three men, also under British terror laws. Two 24-year-old men were arrested at an address in Cheetham Hill, while a third man, 32, was arrested in Longsight.

"The operation is in connection with an investigation concerning suspected terrorist support and facilitation," a GMP statement said.

"At this stage, there is no intelligence of any planned terrorist activity in the UK and the arrests are part of an ongoing investigation."
