War statue shows 'fallen' Harry

LONDON, England -- A statue depicting Prince Harry as a symbolic fallen war hero clutching a locket of his late mother Princess Diana is to go on display next week.

Artist Daniel Edwards said the memorial was intended to honor those willing but unable to serve in the Iraq conflict.

Harry, who is third in line to the British throne, was set to be deployed to Iraq, but due to "specific threats to kill or kidnap him," he remained in England.

The memorial, featuring Harry laid out before the Union Flag with pennies placed over his eyes and his head rested on the bible, will go on show in central London next Thursday as part of the Bridge Art Fair.

Prince Harry is shown holding a bloodied flag of Wales while a desert vulture perches on his boot.

Insurgents in Iraq had said they planned to the prince back to his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, "without his ears."

A bronze casting of Prince Harry's "severed ears" also set for display at the Trafalgar Hotel will be offered on eBay.

Harry had vowed to leave the army if he was left behind while his regiment was sent to a war zone. Edwards, who is based in New York, said: "Prince Harry's spirit must have died the day they told him he couldn't serve. That's what this memorial is about."

David Kesting, a spokesman for the art fair, told the Press Association: "This war memorial is dedicated to the brave at heart.

"But the brave men and women Prince Harry inspired to enlist for combat following his announcement to serve six months in Iraq are not forgotten."

A total of 170 British armed forces personnel have died in the Iraq conflict while 82 have died in Afghanistan. E-mail to a friend
