Six die in attack on U.S.-run Camp Bucca prison

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Six civilian detainees were killed and at least 50 more were wounded in an attack on the U.S.-run Camp Bucca prison in southern Iraq on Saturday.

"No U.S. service members were killed or injured," the military said in a statement.

No additional information was immediately available. Camp Bucca is one of two Multi-National Force Iraq prisons holding more than 19,000 detainees. The other is Camp Cropper, near the Baghdad airport.

Camp Bucca came up last month in an Internet posting, apparently from the group Islamic State of Iraq. The posting implied the group had captured three U.S. soldiers in revenge for "the killings, the displacement, the detentions, the prisons of Abu Ghraib and Bucca." The group is a Sunni insurgent coalition that includes al Qaeda in Iraq.

The soldiers went missing after an ambush May 12 on their military convoy in a volatile region south of Baghdad. Four U.S. soldiers and an Iraqi soldier were killed in the attack outside Mahmoudiya.

The body of Pfc. Joseph J. Anzack Jr., 20, of Torrance, California, was pulled from the Euphrates River in Babil province, south of Baghdad on May 23.

The group later posted video of the military identification cards of the two remaining missing soldiers.

Attacks on Iraqi police

Iraqi police officers patrolling various neighborhoods in Baghdad were the target of several attacks Saturday.

In the Shaab neighborhood in the northeastern part of the capital, two people were killed and 12 others were wounded when a car bomb exploded near Iraqi National Police officers, according to an Iraqi Interior Ministry official. One of those killed was a police officer. Six of the wounded were police.

Separately, but in the same neighborhood, gunmen killed one Iraqi police officer and wounded another, the official said.

In the Adhamiyah district, an area in the central part of the capital under Iraqi army control, a car bomb detonated near an Iraqi police patrol. The explosion killed two national police officers and wounded another, according to the U.S. military. Another policeman was killed from the small-arms fire that followed the blast, the military said.

Two dozen killed

Violence elsewhere in the capital and rest of the country killed 24 people.

A truck loaded with explosives struck an Iraqi army post and checkpoint south of Baghdad, killing at least 12 people and wounding 30 more -- mostly Iraqi soldiers, a Hilla police official said. The blast in Iskandariya partly damaged the Shiite Maqam Ibraheem shrine that is near the base.

A roadside bomb struck a minibus in Baghdad's Baladiyat district, a Shiite section in the southeastern part of the city, killing seven people and wounding 12, a Baghdad police official told CNN.

West of the capital, in Falluja, a mortar landed in a residential area in the southern part of the city, killing one person and wounding four others, an official with Falluja's general hospital said.

North of the capital in Salaheddin province, Samarra police told CNN a mortar round landed in a residential area in a central Samarra neighborhood. Three people were killed and five others were wounded.

The same neighborhood was targeted Friday by a mortar attack, which resulted in the death of two people and the injury of three others. Police said insurgents were apparently trying to attack a nearby joint security base shared by the Iraqi Army and Iraqi police.

Coalition raids

Meanwhile, U.S.-led coalition forces killed five suspected terrorists and detained several others Saturday during targeted raids throughout Iraq, a Coalition Press Information Center statement said.

The raids, which focused on the al Qaeda in Iraq network, were carried out in western Baghdad, southeast of Fallujah, north of Taji and in Baghdad's Sadr City neighborhood.

According to the statement, near Falluja, Iraq soldiers detained four suspected al Qaeda members and coalition forces also killed a suspected al Qaeda in Iraq weapons distributor.

Coalition forces also nabbed a suspected terrorist allegedly promoted to replace an al Qaeda senior leader who was detained May 29.

Three people were also arrested north of Taji, accused of having ties to an al Qaeda in Iraq member who allegedly runs a foreign fighter safe house.
