BEIRUT, Lebanon (CNN) -- Lebanese forces fired four guided air-to-ground missiles at suspected militant positions Saturday inside the Nahr el-Bared Palestinian refugee camp in northern Lebanon, Lebanese security forces said. The attack marked the second time guided missiles were used against the strongholds of Fatah al-Islam militants inside the camp -- and the first instance in more than 20 years of Lebanese firepower from the air. The United Arab Emirates provided the two French-made Gazelle helicopters. The stronghold is believed to be one of the extremists' last to be standing after a monthlong siege. About 2,000 noncombatants are believed to be still inside the camp, either because they are unable or unwilling to leave. Several hundred have evacuated. |
