(CNN) -- JWT was originally founded by William James Carlton in 1864, renamed after James Walter Thompson in 1877, and finally relaunched as JWT in 2005.

Acquired by Sir Martin Sorrell's WPP Group in 1987, JWT has grown to become the biggest advertising agency in the United States and the fourth-largest in the world.

Headquartered in New York City, JWT has more than 8,500 employees in some 300 offices in 87 countries across Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America, Middle East and North America, serving over 1,200 clients.

JWT's "relationship marketing" network is RMG Connect, which is expanding globally with offices in 21 countries.

JWT prides itself on inventing copy and layouts, pioneering ad careers for women, producing the first sponsored TV program, developing account planning and forging the first international network.

JWT's Ethos division focuses on the development and implementation of social responsibility strategies, for both corporate and non-profit clients.

Today, JWT operates based on the concept of "time" as "the new currency." Its role is "to ensure that more people spend more time with our clients' brands;" its purpose is "to create ideas that people want to spend some more time with;" its belief is "the better the idea, the more time people will spend with it."
