BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- The European Commission has said it would recommend that the EU's member nations lift an 11-year ban on U.S. poultry imports.

The EU objected to U.S. practice of washing chickens in chlorine, saying it threatens health and the environment.
Europeans have not been eating American chickens for 11 years due to a ban imposed after health concerns. It costs U.S. poultry producers an estimated $180 million (€117 million) a year in lost sales.
The EU had objected to the American practice of washing chickens in a chlorine solution, saying it threatens public health and the environment.
Moves to lift the ban came after talks between EU and U.S. trade officials who pledged to fight trade barriers.
EU Industry Commissioner Guenter Verheugen and Daniel Price, U.S. President George W. Bush's economic adviser, said Tuesday they would like to see the issue resolved by the next meeting of the Trans-Atlantic Economic Council in October.
