NEW YORK (CNN) -- Police arrested a man they say confessed to mugging an elderly woman in an elevator last week -- an attack that was caught on surveillance video.

Cornelius Abson, 36, confessed during police questioning to that attack and another strong-arm robbery, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters Thursday.
Abson was on parole after being conditionally released from prison in May, Kelly said.
He is a repeat felon with 11 prior arrests and has been convicted of similar crimes in the past, the commissioner added.
The attack took place August 14 in the elevator of an apartment building in Brooklyn's Prospect Heights neighborhood.

Surveillance video released by the New York Police Department shows 85-year-old Lillian France in the elevator with a suspect.
When France attempted to leave the elevator, the man put her in a chokehold. She struggled to free herself from his grip but collapsed to the floor.
The mugger stole $900, grabbed the woman's cane and ran out of the building.
