AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- England captain Paul Collingwood was man of the match as his side hit back after two heavy defeats to take the third one-day international against New Zealand in Auckland.

Adam Gilchrist was in blistering form as he scored a century on his farewell to the WACA.

Collingwood followed up three for 43 with the ball to hit 70 off just 50 balls as England won by six wickets, chasing a revised target of 229 off 47 overs after rain intervened.

New Zealand scored 234 for seven in their 50 overs, indebted to a knock of 88 by Jacob Oram with fine support from captain Daniel Vettori.

England wobbled at the start as Alistair Cook and Phil Mustard went cheaply, but Ian Bell and Kevin Pietersen combined for a 107-run third wicket stand to steady the ship.

Bell was controversially given out leg before wicket for 73 to a ball from Vettori which TV replays indicated he had hit and Pietersen went to the same bowler shortly afterwards.

But Collingwood, finding solid support from Owais Shah, made sure that his side would keep the five-match series alive.

In successive overs he scored eight off Chris Martin, 11 off Kyle Mills then 17 off Paul Hitchcock before an easy single off Oram ended the match with 18 balls to spare.

Earlier, the England seam attack, led by Stuart Broad with three for 32 and well supported by Ryan Sidebottom, Jimmy Anderson and Collingwood were always on top against the home batsmen.

Oram and Vettori prevented a total collapse, putting on 74 for the seventh wicket before Vettori became Collingwood's third victim, caught by Shah for 42.

The remaining matches in the series are in Napier on Wednesday and Christchurch on Saturday.

In the other one-day international on Friday, Adam Gilchrist made a century on his farewell appearance at the WACA in Perth as Australia beat Sri Lanka by 63 runs.

The wicketkeeper, who retires at the end of the triangular series which also includes India, cracked 118 on his home ground as the Australians made 236 in 49.4 overs and then bowled out Sri Lanka for just 173.

Gilchrist smashed nine fours and three sixes from his 132-ball knock.

Kumar Sangakkara took the fight to Australia, but was offered precious little support from his team-mates to finish on 80. Australia head standings from India with Sri Lanka in third.
