Sharapova won the final set in 20 minutes, dropping only eight points.

Sharapova was given a good test in the first two sets by the world number 27, who is continuing a comeback from wrist and ankle injuries.

Sharapova, who has herself had to overcome shoulder problems, now plans her tournaments carefully.

She said: "I don't play nearly as much as as the majority of girls because physically I don't think I can withstand it. I have to be smart about my scheduling.

"I'm hitting the ball well at the moment, but there is a long way to go through the season."

Sharapova started as though her right shoulder was causing her discomfort. She served at a modest pace, made three unforced errors in the first five rallies and delivered a double fault.

Zvonareva was unable to take advantage and impose herself, which enabled Sharapova to gradually take control of the opening set.

Zvonareva then began to return serve better, and find more accuracy which boosted her confidence.

Zvonareva broke Sharapova from 40-love up, and then held three times without too much difficulty, managing to force more errors from the world number five.

Sharapova saved four set points before relinquishing the second set and then broke serve straight away at the start of the third set .She raced into a 4-0 lead, her consistent ground strokes stretching Zvonareva to the limit.

After conceding only eight points in the final set she wrapped it up in 20 minutes to claim the title in style. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
