Swiss rider Cancellara wins Italian race

SAN BENEDETTO DEL TRONTO, Italy -- Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland won the weeklong Tirreno-Adriatico race on Tuesday when Italy's former amateur world champion Francesco Chicchi took the final stage.

Swiss rider Fabian Cancellara took the Tirreno-Adriatico title by 16 seconds from Italy's Enrico Gasparotto.

Cancellara, the two-time defending world time-trial champion with Team CSC, finished with a 16-second advantage on Enrico Gasparotto of Italy.

Thomas Lovkvist of Sweden finished third overall, 40 seconds behind.

Liquigas rider Chicchi won the 176-kilometer leg around San Benedetto del Tronto in four hours, 50 minutes, 50 seconds.

Chicchi held off Sicilian rider Danilo Napolitano with Mark Cavendish of Britain third in a sprint finish.

Chicchi won the under-23 race at the 2002 worlds in Zolder, Belgium.

The Tirreno-Adriatico race is a warmup for Saturday's 99th Milan-San Remo race, the opening single-day classic of the cycling season. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
