LONDON, England (CNN) -- Red Bull's second-string Formula One team, Toro Rosso, is for sale.

Red Bull founder Dietrich Mateschitz has put his second-string team up for sale.

Co-owner Dietrich Mateschitz, the founder of the Red Bull drinks empire, said new rules being introduced in 2010 had forced his hand.

"It is not a big secret that we have put Toro Rosso on the market," he told the Swiss publication Motorsport Aktuell's website.

"For the start of 2010 there will be a rule change and there will be no more synergy regarding design and construction of cars between Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso.

"There I see the necessity that we continue with one team only. We will not sell Toro Rosso during the 2008 season but it will be before 2010."

Toro Rosso has essentially been a feeder team for Red Bull, using a chassis based on its parent team's design but a Ferrari engine instead of the Renault-powered cars driven by David Coulthard and Mark Webber. This set-up will not be allowed under the new rules.

Mateschitz bought the team, then known as Minardi, in 2005 from Paul Stoddart before selling a 50 percent stake to the former grand prix winner Gerhard Berger. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
