INDIAN WELLS, California -- World number one Roger Federer moved into the semifinals of the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells without having to step on court, after opponent Tommy Haas withdrew suffering from a sinus infection.
World number one Federer is still seeking his first title of the 2008 season.
It is a fresh setback for Haas, a former world number two who is now world ranked 36th.
The 29-year-old German is battling through a comeback after undergoing a third shoulder operation in November.
Federer, who is seeking his first title of 2008 after a bout of mononucleosis contributed to an uncharacteristically slow start to the year, will now meet the unseeded Mardy Fish in the last four.
American Fish, ranked 98th in the world, fired 22 aces en route to a surprise 6-3 6-7 7-6 win over seventh-seeded Argentine David Nalbandian.
Fish joins the top three players in the world in the final four, as world number two and defending champion Rafael Nadal will take on number three Novak Djokovic, the reigning Australian Open champion, in the other semifinal -- a rematch last year's final. E-mail to a friend ![]()
