PROVIDENCE, Guyana -- Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene completed his 22nd Test century before tea to keep his side on course for a formidable total against West Indies in the first Test in Guyana.

Jayawardene moved into three figures from his 189th delivery.

Jayawardene made 136 and Chaminda Vaas an unbeaten 54, as Sri Lanka, reached 476 for eight declared in their first innings.

Vaas followed up by dismissing West Indies opener Chris Gayle for 0 as the home side crawled to 29 for one in 16 overs by the close.

Jayawardene reached his hundred when he turned his 189th delivery from Dwayne Bravo to mid-wicket for a single.

The Sri Lanka captain benefited from some ragged West Indies fielding throughout his innings, and came close to losing his wicket before lunch.

On 39, he top-edged a cut at a delivery from left-arm spin bowler Sulieman Benn and the ball flew past Chris Gayle at slip.

Prasanna Jayawardenes helped his namesake add 54 for the sixth wicket either side of lunch before Daren Powell claimed his first wicket of the match, when he removed wicketkeeper/batsman Prasanna in the first over after the pair had taken Sri Lanka to lunch on 330 for five.

Prasanna was bowled for 21 in the first over with the second new ball, driving loosely at a good delivery which moved back and sailed between his bat and pad.

Vaas's half-century was his ninth as a number eight. The only other Test players batting in that position to better his total are Kapil Dev (13) and Daniel Vettori and Shane Warne with 11 apiece.

Sri Lanka are seeking their first Test win in the Caribbean having lost two and drawn two in their previous four. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
