VIANA, Spain -- Spain's David Herrero of the Karpin team has won the 195km third stage of the Tour of the Basque Country between Erandio and Viana -- while Spain's Alberto Contador retained his overall lead.

Herrero, who had finished third in the opening two stages of the race, now lies third overall -- eight seconds behind reigning Tour de France champion Contador who leads Ezequiel Mosquera by just three seconds.

The 28-year-old Herrero beat compatriot Luis Leon Sanchez and Italy's Olympic champion Paolo Bettini in a sprint finish in a time of four hours, 54 minutes, 24 seconds.

Breakaway riders Morris Possoni and Paul Martens spent almost four hours ahead of the main peloton but were swallowed up over the closing few kilometers.

Contador got a puncture at the 80km mark but had no problems re-entering the peloton after help from his Astana team-mates.

On Thursday, the riders leave Viana in the direction of Vitoria-Gasteiz, 171km away. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
