(CNN) -- Heikki Kovalainen showed no ill-effects of his high speed crash in Barcelona as he set the second fastest time in opening free practice for Sunday's Turkish Grand Prix.

Kovalainen puts his McLaren through its paces on the Istanbul circuit.

The Finn had to receive medical clearance to race in Istanbul but posted a lap of one minute 27.456 seconds in his McLaren on Friday morning.

But Ferrari's Felipe Massa served notice of their intent by setting the quickest lap as he bids for a third straight win in Turkey.

Massa lapped in one minute 27.323 seconds, with Kovalainen's teammate Lewis Hamilton third fastest in the early skirmishes. Former world champion Fernando Alonso was fourth best in his Renault with Honda's Jenson Button rounding out the top five.

Championship leader Kimi Raikkonen only managed three laps in his Ferrari ahead of the afternoon session and Saturday's qualifying.

The session was not without its difficulties as Massa, Hamilton and Force India's Adrian Sutil all spun out at turn three, Massa also running off at a later corner as he pushed.

Kovalainen, 26, spent a night in hospital with concussion and minor injuries after his 250 kph crash in the preceding round in Spain.

A wheel failure caused a tire on Kovalainen's car to explode and send him barreling into a tire wall.
