Former Rome Masters champion Amelie Mauresmo has withdrawn from this year's tournament, which starts on Monday, with a rib injury, officials confirmed.

The 29-year-old who won at the Foro Italico in 2004 and 2005 after losing in two previous finals, was advised by doctors not to risk a small muscle tear in her ribs.

She apparently suffered the problem a few weeks ago, during spells of heavy coughing caused by an illness.

She was forced to pull out of the current Berlin clay event, one of the two Tier I WTA tuneups for Roland Garros, which begins in 13 days time.

Mauresmo was replaced as 16th seed by Russian Nadia Petrova.

The Rome event is already without world number one Justine Henin, who has dropped out complaining of fatigue following her loss to Russian Dinara Safina in Berlin.

The field still includes seven of the world's top 10 players, including reigning champion Jelena Jankovic of Serbia.
