LONDON, England -- Jacob Oram's defiant hundred guided New Zealand to a draw against England in the first Test match at Lord's.
Oram celebrates his century at Lord's at New Zealand drew the first Test with England.
Giant left-hander Oram came to the crease at 120 for four, 78 runs ahead, with England scenting the chance of victory -- after Brendon McCullum retired hurt -- and spanked a 120-ball century as New Zealand hurtled out of range.
He was eventually bowled by Ryan Sidebottom in the third over with the second new ball for 101. But the fifth stalemate in a row at the home of cricket since 2006, although this one has been heavily influenced by bad weather, was confirmed shortly after 5pm with the Kiwis on 269 for six.
McCullum resumed his innings upon Oram's departure, having been a casualty of England's efforts to force victory, only to fall to James Anderson before stumps were drawn.
Wicketkeeper McCullum was earlier taken for an X-ray after being struck a vicious blow on his forearm from a short ball by Stuart Broad shortly after lunch.
Two big lumps swelled beneath McCullum's left elbow and he was checked over as a precaution.
England's pacemen felt they missed a trick by not bouncing McCullum enough in the first innings and Broad produced a delivery which gave the batsman no room for manoeuvre.
The 26-year-old top-scored with 97 in the first innings but this time it was Jamie How, on his 27th birthday, who proved a menace.
How batted for over three hours but was eventually prised out for 68 by Broad when a delivery turned him around and flew to third slip as he aimed to the legside.
Earlier, How was given a pre-lunch life by Andrew Strauss, who fluffed a straightforward opportunity. How was four short of a half-century when he edged Broad's sixth delivery of the day -- although it travelled fast it came at head height and should have been taken.
Meanwhile, England have added fast bowler Chris Tremlett to their squad for the second Test starting on Friday at Old Trafford.
Tremlett will replace the injured Matthew Hoggard in a 12-man squad.
Hoggard, left out of the team that drew at Lord's, is unfit after having his thumb broken by rival seamer Stephen Harmison in a county match last week.
Hampshire pace bowler Tremlett, who won three Test caps against India last year, impressed for the England Lions against New Zealand during last week's tour match at his Rose Bowl ground.
