(CNN) -- Roman Kreuziger of the Czech Republic produced a stunning performance in Saturday's 25 kilometer time trial from Altorf to Klausenpass to leave himself in pole position to win the Tour of Switzerland.
Kreuzinger enjoys the spoils of victory after his brilliant stage win.
Liquigas rider Kreuziger went into the test against the clock 27 seconds adrift of Kim Kirchen of Luxembourg, but recorded a time of one hour and 22 seconds over a mountainous course to obliterate the opposition.
Kirchen of the High Road team finished over three minutes down to slip to seventh overall.
Kreuziger had 16 seconds to spare over second-placed Venezuelan Jose Rujano, of the Caisse d'Epargne team, with Astana's Andreas Kloeden finishing third, one further second behind.
Germany's Kloeden has moved up to second overall, 49 seconds behind the new holder of the yellow jersey.
Kreuziger, a former world junior champion, should seal victory in Sunday's ninth and final stage to the Swiss capital of Berne.
It would be the 22-year-old's first Pro Tour victory.
