(CNN) -- Felipe Massa moved to the top of the drivers' championship by winning the French Grand Prix at Magny Cours, after team-mate Kimi Raikkonen had problems with a broken exhaust.

Massa now leads the drivers' standings by two points from Kubica.

Reigning champion Raikkonen, who had been six seconds clear of the field by the 30th lap when his right-hand exhaust cracked, was still able to finish second.

Jarno Trulli gave Toyota their best performance of the season by finishing third, holding off aggressive challenges from McLaren's Heikki Kovalainen and BMW Sauber's Robert Kubica.

Trulli's podium place had added poignancy as he raced in honor of former team principal Ove Andersson, who was tragically killed in a rallying accident earlier this month.

Britain's Lewis Hamilton ran into more disciplinary problems after having to start from 13th place on the grid because of a 10-place penalty following his pit crash in the Canadian Grand Prix.

A difficult task became an almost impossible one when Hamilton was given a drive-through penalty for cutting the Nurburgring chicane as he passed Toro Rosso's Sebastian Vettel on the opening lap.

Even without the penalties it looked clear that his McLaren did not have sufficient speed to challenge the Ferraris.

Raikkonen, starting on pole, needed to make good early progress as he was due to make his first pit stop two laps earlier than team mate Massa, who started in second place on the grid.

The Finn realized his objective and was nearly five seconds in front of Massa when he stopped on lap 21.

Massa could not make much headway because of traffic problems on the two laps before he went into the pits, and Raikkonen looked to be well on the way to victory until his exhaust problem forced him to give way to his Brazilian team mate.

Raikkonen initially looked in danger of being overhauled by Trulli and Kubica but he was able to adapt to the problem on his car and tighten his hold on second place.

A late rain shower put pressure on Trulli, whose Toyota has given handling problems in the wet, but he stood firm, despite an anxious moment when his car banged wheels with Kovalainen's as the Finn made one last desperate effort to pass on the final lap.

Sixth-placed Red Bull's Mark Webber managed to stay ahead of Renault pair Nelson Piquet Jr and Fernando Alonso.

Alonso ran wide with two laps left as he lapped Force India's Adrian Sutil, enabling Piquet to score his first points of the season.

Massa leads the championship by two points from Kubica, with Raikkonen a further three behind.

"It's nice but my dream is not just to lead the championship, my dream is to win the championship," Brazilian told the Associated Press after his triumph.

Hamilton, who has now had two poor races, is 10 points adrift of Massa as he prepares for his home Grand Prix at Silverstone in a fortnight.
