(CNN) -- Frenchman Gilles Simon captured the Indianapolis Tennis Championships title on Sunday when he defeated defending champion Dmitry Tursunov 6-4 6-4 on Sunday.

Simon parades his trophy after beating holder Dmitry Tursunov in the Indianapolis final.
Third-seeded Russian Tursunov was failing in his bid to become only the third man in the last 30 years to defend his title here after Pete Sampras (1991, 1992) and Andy Roddick (2003, 2004).
Simon has had a sparkling debut week in the U.S. Midwest, as he produced his best effort at a U.S. tournament after a previous top showing in the 2007 New Haven quarterfinal.
The second seed has now won two titles this season, after also winning in Casablanca on clay in May, and four in his career.
"My goal at the start of the season was to reach top 15," said the 25th-ranked Simon. "I started the year at 30th, but with my ranking, I need to do better at Masters Series events and Grand Slams if I'm to improve.
"My best so far is two third rounds at the Australian Open and one at the U.S. Open. That's not enough," added the 23-year-old.
Tursunov, who ended with 32 unforced errors and lost his serve twice, was trying to capture his fifth title and first since winning in Sydney in January.
Simon will play a qualifier in next week's Toronto Masters before the winner faces Roger Federer in the second round.
