(CNN) -- Russia retained the Fed Cup when Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Spanish number one to give her team an unassailable 3-0 lead in the final in Madrid

Kuznetsova had to battle hard to overcome Spain's number one Garrigues.
The world number seven made sure that Russia would collect the trophy for the fourth time in five years by winning Sunday's first match of the day 5-7 6-3 6-4 in 2 hours 39 minutes.
The 23-year-old Kuznetsova raced to a 4-0 lead in the first set before Garrigues could cope with her powerful ground strokes.
The Spaniard fought back to 5-5 and then broke Kuznetsova's serve to go one ahead, allowing her to serve for the first set which she won after one hour and 10 minutes in cloudless sunshine.
The second and third sets both went to 3-3 but Kuznetsova's deeper, more powerful serves helped her through.
On Saturday, world number nine Zvonareva beat Medina Garrigues 6-3 6-4 in the opening rubber of the five-match, clay-court tie before Kuznetsova defeated 20-year-old Carla Suarez 6-3 6-1.
