(CNN) -- Jo-Wilfried Tsonga upset Novak Djokovic to claim the Thailand Open title on Sunday and gain a measure of revenge for his loss to the Serbian in the final of this year's Australian Open.
Tsonga was claiming his first ATP Tour title with victory over Djokovic in Bangkok.
It was the first ATP Tour title for the young Frenchman, who fell to his knees in triumph after wrapping up a 7-6 6-4 victory in Bangkok.
"I didn't even think about the revenge," Tsonga told the Associated Press.
"It's very special to win my first tournament. I wanted this since I was young. It's a dream come true," he added.
Tsonga was playing only his second tournament after missing three months following knee surgery, but it did not show in a hard-fought contest which lasted 92 minutes.
Top seed Djokovic gained an early break in the first set, but lost his own service as it went to a tiebreaker. Tsonga, ranked 20th in the world, claimed it seven points to four and took Djokovic's service for the second time to establish a winning advantage.
He was forced to save three break back points in the final game, but closed out victory when Djokovic sent a return long on match point.
World number three Djokovic was looking to close the gap on the top two Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, but was unable to find the form which took him to his first grand slam title earler this year in Melbourne. It was his third successive loss in finals as he looks to add to his four titles won in 2008.
