(CNN) -- Wicketkeeper Brad Haddin scored a maiden Test century as Australia ended the third day of the second Test against New Zealand in a winning position.

Haddin made 169 and shared a sixth wicket partnership of 181 with Michael Clarke as Australia took a 265 run first innings lead in Adelaide.

New Zealand were 35 without loss at stumps, facing an uphill battle to avoid defeat in the second Test of a two match series.

Clarke and Haddin came together after Michael Hussey and Andrew Symonds were dismissed in quick succession by Chris Martin in the morning.

Clarke, who was bowled for 98 in the First Test at the Gabba, gave his fans a scare as he closed in on triple figures.

He pushed the ball out onto the leg side, hesitated mid-pitch before completing the single that notched up his ninth Test century.

He was eventually dismissed when he played at a wide delivery from Ian O'Brien and was caught by Jesse Ryder in the gully.

But Haddin, dropped off a simple chance to Daniel Flynn when on 72, raced to his century with a string of fours off Ryder and continued his domination after tea.

He smashed 17 off one Aaron Redmond over before he was caught on the mid-wicket fence by Peter Fulton.

Brett Lee contributed 19 and Mitchell Johnson added 23 as Australia were eventually dismissed for 535.

O'Brien finished with figures of three for 111 while Redmond, captain Daniel Vettori and Chris Martin all collected two wickets each.

In other cricket news on Sunday, Sri Lanka completed a 5-0 series whitewash of hosts Zimbabwe in their one-day international series.

Star spin bowler Muttiah Muralitharan took five wickets to lead Sri Lanka to an exciting win by 19 runs.

Sri Lanka were bowled out for 152 -- their lowest total in the series, but Murali claimed 5-29 for his 10th five-wicket haul in 50-over internationals and Nuwan Kulasekara took 3-14 to bowl out Zimbabwe for 133 at Harare Sports Club.
