(CNN) -- The West Indies made cricket history by scoring the first-ever "eliminator over" win in Twenty20 internationals as they beat New Zealand in Auckland.

Gayle hits a six off Vettori during the eliminator over which yielded 25 runs.
The two teams both scored 155 runs in their allocated overs -- the match decided by each having one over extra over -- with the side scoring the most runs claiming victory.
Gayle, who had starred with the top score of 67 in his team's innings as well as taking two for 16 in the New Zealand knock, proceeded to blast 25 in the extra over.
It was bowled by New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori, who was hit for three sixes and a four by Gayle.
New Zealand could only manage 15 in their eliminator over.
The two teams had drawn the earlier two-match Test series and were equally closely matched in limited overs cricket.
Vettori elected to bat after winning the toss and were indebted to Ross Taylor, who made 62 with four sixes and four other boundaries to lead them to a reasonable score of 155.
Gayle, who had shined with ball, plundered 67 off 41 balls including five fours and five sixes, but was given little support by teammates.
Xavier Marshall hit 28, but needing 42 runs to win off 35 balls with six wickets left, the West Indies stumbled as Tim Southee took crucial wickets.
Requiring six off two balls, the West Indies managed five -- forcing a tie and further heroics from Gayle.
The second and final Twenty20 game in Hamilton on Sunday will be followed by five one-day internationals.
In other cricket action on Friday, Sri Lanka were restricted to 172 for six wickets on the first day of the opening Test against Bangladesh in Dhaka.
Shakib Al Hasan and Shahadat Hossain shared five wickets as the visitors slumped from 119 for one in the afternoon session.
Thilan Samaraweera was unbeaten on 20 and Chaminda Vaas had yet to score when bad light stopped play early.
