(CNN) -- Former captain Michael Vaughan has been omitted from England's 16-strong squad for the forthcoming Test series in the West Indies because of doubts over his form.

Former England captain Vaughan has been omitted from the Test squad for the West Indies.

National selector Geoff Miller explained the decision saying that the 34-year-old Yorkshire batsman "has not yet had an opportunity to prove his form in order to be considered for selection for the Test side."

There was some encouragement for Vaughan with Miller stating: "He does, however, remain very much in our thoughts as we continue to plan for the npower Ashes Test series against Australia (next summer)."

Vaughan stood down as England captain during the home series against South Africa in August and Miller added: "He will play a full part in Yorkshire's pre-season program which will include a tour to Dubai and we will continue to monitor his form closely once the domestic season begins in April."

Vaughan's absence means that Owais Shah of Middlesex will challenge Warwickshire's Ian Bell for the number three position in the Caribbean.

England's 16-man Test squad also includes paceman Ryan Sidebottom, who missed the recent series in India because of injury, and Yorkshire's highly-regarded leg-spinner Adil Rashid who will be looking for his first cap.

England Test squad: Kevin Pietersen (Hampshire, capt), Tim Ambrose (Warwickshire), James Anderson (Lancashire), Ian Bell (Warwickshire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Paul Collingwood (Durham), Alastair Cook (Essex), Andrew Flintoff (Lancashire), Steve Harmison (Durham), Monty Panesar (Northamptonshire), Matt Prior (Sussex), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Owais Shah (Middlesex), Ryan Sidebottom (Nottinghamshire), Andrew Strauss (Middlesex), Graeme Swann (Nottinghamshire).

One Day squad: Pietersen (capt), Anderson, Bell, Ravi Bopara (Essex), Broad, Collingwood, Steven Davies (Worcestershire), Flintoff, Harmison, Dimitri Mascarenhas (Hampshire), Samit Patel (Nottinghamshire), Prior, Shah, Sidebottom, Swann.
