LONDON, England -- Manchester United received a New Year boost as striker Carlos Tevez received positive news about his damaged ankle.
Tevez had to be carried off the pitch by the United medical team.
The Argentina international was carried off after 71 minutes of United's 1-0 win over Birmingham at Old Trafford on Tuesday and there were fears he could even have suffered a broken ankle.
But a United spokesman told the Premier League club's Web site "Nothing is broken, Carlos Tevez has just got a badly bruised right ankle."
Tevez scored in United's win which keeps them within two points of leaders Arsenal, but a lengthy absence could have damaged their title challenge.
United boss Alex Ferguson admitted as much after the hard-won victory and said that Tevez was a major concern for this weekend's FA Cup trip to Aston Villa, and that is not a situation that will have changed despite Wednesday's positive assessment.
Ferguson said yesterday: "It was a bad tackle and the longer the game went on, the worse the injury got," he said.
Tevez will likely be replaced at the weekend by regular strike partner Wayne Rooney, who missed the 2-1 defeat West Ham and the win over Birmingham with a virus. E-mail to a friend
