TAMALE, Ghana -- Tunisia reached the African Nations Cup quarterfinals on Thursday when they sealed top spot in Group D after a goalless draw with Angola who also reached the last eight.

Lemerre tries to inspire Tunisia during a drab draw against Angola that saw both sides reach the last eight.

The stalemate rendered the day's other match between South Africa and Senegal meaningless, as both needed to win and hope for a decisive result in Tamale to have any chance of progressing.

Tunisia will face Cameroon in the last eight, while Angola, who are through to the quarters for the first time, will now play reigning champions Egypt.

The drab draw played out by the top two left them level on points, but the Carthage Eagles finish top by virtue of having scored a goal more during the group stage.

Tunisia coach Roger Lemerre maintained his fondness for rotation and dropped four of the side that overcame South Africa 3-1, including two-goal hero Francileudo dos Santos.

In Kumasi, Elrio van Heerden (14) was left alone to volley Bafana Bafana into an early lead before West Ham loanee Henri Camara (37) slotted home to level after a mistake by Blackburn's Aaron Mokoena.

World Cup hosts in 2010 South Africa finished bottom of the standings with two points, the same as Senegal who enjoyed a better goals difference.

"We controlled things at the start of the game. The second half was an open game and we created many chances but failed to score again," said South Africa coach Carlos Alberto Parreira.

"We are not happy with the result as we did not win but we go home with some positives. This is a new team and my young players learnt a lot about football at this level.

"We will carry on with these players for the 2010 World Cup. In two years they would have gained the necessary experience to represent the country well at the World Cup." E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
