EINDHOVEN, Netherlands -- Coach Juande Ramos' dream of a UEFA Cup hat-trick ended as Tottenham suffered European heartbreak 6-5 on penalties against PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands.

Berbatov is mobbed as he sends the tie into extra time but Tottenham then lost in a penalty shoot-out.

And on a bad night for the Premier League, Aiyegbeni Yakubu's spot-kick against the post condemned Everton to last-16 exit after they lost 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out to Fiorentina at Goodison Park.

Spurs coach Ramos has endured a few scares winning the competition with Sevilla in the past two seasons - goalkeeper Andres Palop scored at this stage a year ago.

His side trailed 1-0 from the first leg at White Hart Lane and Dimitar Berbatov took the tie to extra-time with the only goal of the return against the Dutch.

With no further goals, the game went down to a shoot-out and Spurs eventually went out after Pascal Chimbonda missed in sudden death.

Defender Jonathan Woodgate told five: "No-one likes to lose on penalties, it is not nice really - but we did not play well in the first leg.

"They did not have a chance in this game and we kept them busy but full credit to them, they got through on the night."

Tottenham won the Carling Cup earlier in the season but their European exit means they only have a top-half finish in the Barclays Premier League to focus on.

"We now want to try to push as far up the league as possible," Woodgate added

Bulgarian Berbatov levelled with a ferocious drive eight minutes from the end of normal time, but the penalty shoot-out turned PSV's way when Tottenham's fifth kick by Jermaine Jenas was saved when a goal would have put them through.

Tottenham's hopes were high after keeper Paul Robinson had saved an earlier PSV kick.

Berbatov's goal came when he met Chimbonda's driven cross with a first-time volley on the edge of the area that left Gomes with no chance.

Berbatov could have won the game with a volley in extra-time, as could Malbranque, but it went to penalties.

Everton rallied to 2-2 on aggregate against Fiorentina with goals by Andrew Johnson and Mikel Arteta.

But Yakubu missed in the shootout and visiting goalkeeper Sebastian Frey then saved from Phil Jagielka to send the Italian side through to the last eight.

"Sometimes you don't get your just desserts," Everton midfielder Phil Neville said. "We created enough chances to win two or three games."

"Tonight we proved we're a good team. The luck just wasn't with us." E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
