LONDON, England -- Roma have confirmed that Francesco Totti will not travel with the squad for Wednesday's Champions League return with Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Francesco Totti's thigh injury has prevented him from returning to Roma's side for their Old Trafford showdown.

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti announced on Saturday that he hoped his captain would be available for the quarterfinal clash, which Roma trail 2-0 after the first leg.

Spalletti said: "I don't think he will make it. Of course I would like to have a player like Totti available to me."

However, Totti's name was a notable absentee from the squad list announced on the Roma Web site.

The club's top scorer has been sidelined since suffering a thigh injury during a 1-1 draw with Cagliari on March 29.

United defender Rio Ferdinand could be back in action before the end of the season after tests showed the injury that forced him out of Sunday's 2-2 draw at Middlesbrough was not a broken bone.

Ferdinand limped out of the match in the 70th minute with a left foot injury, but United said Monday that a scan had shown it was not a broken metatarsal bone -- an injury that can rule out a player for several weeks.

The England international will definitely miss Wednesday's Champions League quarterfinal but the club have not said how long they expects to be without him.

Ferdinand has been a crucial part of the best defense in the Premier League this season, helping United to a three-point lead over Chelsea.

The leading pair meet at Stamford Bridge on April 26. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
