MANCHESTER, England -- England defender Rio Ferdinand is on the verge of signing a fresh five-year contract with Manchester United, says his agent.

Ferdinand's current deal still has two years to run.

Pini Zahavi told the Daily Express: "Rio is very happy there. He wanted to stay at United and they wanted him to stay."

Zahavi believes that Ferdinand, whose new deal is believed to be worth around £130,000 ($255,700) a week, still has many years ahead of him at Old Trafford.

"I believe he can play longer than Maldini - and they believe so at Manchester United as well," said Zahavi.

Italian international Paolo Maldini is still in action with AC Milan at the age of 39, 10 years older than Ferdinand.

Ferdinand has two years to go on his current contract and talks over an extension had been planned for the summer. Reports suggest that the deal is already close to the signing stage.

Ferdinand moved to United from Leeds for a British record £30m in 2002. E-mail to a friend E-mail to a friend
