(CNN) -- Alex Ferguson believes goal difference will prove the crucial factor as his Manchester United side close on a 10th Premier League crown with only Chelsea standing in their way in the final round of matches on Sunday.

United manager Alex Ferguson is set for a tense final afternoon at the JJB.

With United and Chelsea tied on 84 points, it is the 78 goals scored by Ferguson's men which gives them the vital edge heading into their game at Wigan while Chelsea are at home to Bolton.

Ferguson is unbothered that should both teams score their expected wins that the championship will be decided by such a slender margin and believes his team have played in the best traditions of the club.

"We have our beliefs and they will not change," he told the Press Association.

"We play the game the way it should be played. That is our history. It is indelibly printed at this club."

Chelsea manager Avram Grant admitted that United had played attractive football all season but believes the Italian system of a playoff to decide the title when two sides are level and points and head-to-head record is more appropriate.

"I must admit that United have played very good football. They think this is the best season since Sir Alex Ferguson came," he told the Press Association.

"But I prefer the system in Italy. You play a playoff if you're level and it is decided on that."

Grant also made a stout defense against claims that his team had adopted a too pragmatic approach despite the promise of attacking football when he succeeded Jose Mourinho.

"We've won games 6-0, 6-1, 4-0 and 3-0 this season. When you miss so many players, the first target is to win games, especially in the beginning," he added.

United have doubts over the fitness of England international Wayne Rooney who has been struggling to shrug off a hip injury and may be left on the substitutes' bench at the JJB Stadium ahead of the Champions League final clash against Chelsea in Moscow on May 21.

"I am not so sure about Wayne," said Ferguson.

"Maybe I will have him as a substitute on Sunday. But he will certainly be fit for the Champions League final."

There is better news for United over Nemanja Vidic who is set to return after injury, while Chelsea's only worry is Vidic's counterpart in central defense, Ricardo Carvalho, who has a back problem.
