(CNN) -- France star Franck Ribery is set to miss the start of Bayern Munich's Bundesliga season after undergoing surgery on torn ligaments above his ankle.

Ribery was clearly in agony after sustaining his ankle injury against Italy.

The 25-year-old suffered the injury early in his France's 2-0 loss to Italy on Tuesday, a result which saw them make a humiliating exit from Euro 2008.

It was a devastating blow to France so early in the match and there were initially fears that he had actually broken his leg.

But subsequent scans revealed ligament damage and the attacking midfielder has had surgery followed by up to two months on the sidelines.

"It is very regrettable that Franck has injured himself at the European Championships," said Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on the club's Web site.

"However, we are happy that the severe initial diagnosis has not been confirmed."

The form of Ribery was one of the few bright spots for France in their dismal Group C campaign at the European Championships as they garnered a solitary point.

He joined Bayern Munich from French side Marseille in the summer of 2007 and played a major role as the German giants regained the Bundesliga title.
