(CNN) -- Last weekend saw the European football season really kick into gear with the English Premier League and the German Bundeslia both getting under way.
Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor took the individual honors on the opening weekend of the Premier League.
In a regular weekly feature on CNN.com, we'll be taking a look back at all the previous weekend's action, highlighting all the significant results.
English Premier League
The season kicked off at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday where Arsene Wenger's young Arsenal side faced newly-promoted West Brom.
Wenger paraded one new signing, in the shape of French international midfielder Samir Nasri, and it took the former Marseille player just four minutes to make his mark, scoring after a well-worked move on the left to give the home side a narrow but deserved 1-0 victory.
In the day's other six matches, there was a fairytale start for Hull City in their first-ever Premier League match at home to Fulham.
Despite going behind to an early Seol header, the Tigers lived up to their nickname by roaring back into contention through new signing Geovanni.
And with nine minutes remaining, substitute Caleb Folan took advantage of an error in the Fulham defense to secure a 2-1 win.
The third newly-promoted team were Stoke, but they were given a rude awaking by going down 3-1 at Bolton, who are past masters at spoiling the party.
Gretar Steinsson, Kevin Davies and new signing Johan Elmander put Bolton out of sight in just 46 minutes, with Ricardo Fuller's last-gasp header giving Stoke a consolation goal.
Storm clouds have been gathering over Everton this summer as manager David Moyes has been unable to add to his squad despite the sale of England striker Andy Johnson.
The fans' mood will not be helped after their 3-2 home defeat by Blackburn, although the match looked destined for a draw until Dutch defender Andre Ooijer popped up in the final minute to give new Rovers manager Paul Ince a victory in his first match in charge.
There also appears to be trouble brewing across Merseyside at Liverpool, where a poor display at Sunderland was rescued, yet again, by star striker Fernando Torres.
The Spaniard's 83rd minute goal gave The Reds a hard-fought 1-0 victory, but the continued pursuit of Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry appears to be causing another rift between manager Rafa Benitez and his board of directors.
Big-spending Tottenham have ambitions of breaking into the top four this season, but their campaign got off to a disappointing start with a 2-1 defeat at Middlesbrough.
With the unsettled Dimitar Berbatov left on the substitutes' bench, David Wheater and former Spurs striker Mido scored the decisive goals, with a late Robert Huth own goal only a consolation for the visitors.
West Ham striker Dean Ashton highlighted his England credentials by scoring both goals in The Hammers' 2-1 win over Wigan, although the injury-prone forward limped off near the end of the match. On-loan Egyptian striker Amr Zaki pulled a goal back for the visitors.
Three matches took place on Sunday, and Chelsea signalled their title intent with an impressive 4-0 thumping of FA Cup winners Portsmouth.
Joe Cole, Nicolas Anelka, Frank Lampard and new signing Deco were all on target to mark a stylish opening to Luis Felipe Scolari's managerial reign at Stamford Bridge.
That result not only saw Chelsea top the table after the first round of matches, it also sent shockwaves around Old Trafford, as champions Manchester United struggled to an 1-1 draw against Newcastle.
Obafemi Martins headed the visitors into the lead but Darren Fletcher levelled just two minutes later in an unimpressive display by the European champions.
The best individual performance of the weekend was produced by Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor, who scored a seven-minute hat-trick in the 4-2 win over Manchester City.
John Carew also found the net as City's woes continued following their shock 1-0 UEFA Cup defeat by Danish side Midtjylland on Thursday.
German Bundesliga
Champions Bayern Munich were left to rue missed opportunities on Friday night as they opened the defense of their title with a 2-2 home draw against Hamburg, who recovered from going 2-0 behind in the opening 16 minutes.
Bastian Schweinsteiger and Lukas Podolski looked to have given the Bavarians a perfect to the season, but ex-Bayern stars Paolo Guerrero and Piotr Trochowski came back to haunt their former club and earn Martin Jol's side a deserved point.
Schalke will again be one of the teams to beat this season -- and they opened their season with a comfortable 3-0 home win over Hannover with German striker Kevin Kuranyi scoring twice.
Big-spending Wolfsburg also took three points on the opening day, courtesy of a 2-1 victory over newly-promoted Cologne, while a thrilling match at the BayArena saw home side Leverkusen beaten 3-2 by Borussia Dortmund, with teenage defender Neven Subotic scoring the decisive goal on his debut.
Newcomers Moenchengladbach went the same way as Cologne in suffering an opening defeat, as 2007 champions Stuttgart cruised to a 3-1 victory with German internationals Mario Gomez and Thomas Hitzlsperger both on target.
However, perhaps the most impressive performance in the opening day came from the third of the promoted sides Hoffenheim.
The big-spenders have zoomed through the leagues in recent seasons and they showed the jump to the top flight will not be a step too far with a 3-0 win at Cottbus -- with Vedad Ibisevic scoring twice.
French Ligue 1
Newly-promoted Grenoble are the surprise leaders after two matches in the French Division One, as a goal from Algerian striker Nassim Akrour proved enough to beat Rennes 1-0.
Grenoble are the only team with a maximum six points from their opening two matches -- and they head the table by two points from a group of four teams.
Marseille lie second following a 4-0 thrashing of Auxerre, their second succesive four-goal haul.
Mamadou Niang netted twice, although his second goal went in off defender Stephane Grichting. Substitute Elliot Grandin made it 3-0 and Dutch midfielder Boudewijn Zenden sealed the win with a late free-kick.
Defending champions Lyon are third after being held to a 0-0 draw by fifth-placed Lorient. However, the home side had goalkeeper Fabien Audard to thank for their point, making a string of important saves.
The other side with four points are Monaco, who drew 1-1 at Nantes after being given an early lead by Camel Meriem.
Sochaux prop up the other 19 teams as they lost 2-1 at St Etienne to lie bottom of the table -- the only team without a point after two matches.
Scottish Premier League
There is also an unexpected look to the top of the Scottish table as minnows Hamilton mirror Grenoble's start by leading the way with a maximum six points from their two matches.
The newly-promoted club made it two wins from two with a 1-0 victory at Inverness Caledonian Thistle courtesy of Richard Offiong's goal early in the second half.
Rangers have also won both their matches and will be looking to make up for the disappointment of being dumped out of the Champions League qualifying stages.
New signing Kyle Lafferty and fellow-striker Kris Boyd were both on target to give the Glasgow giants a 2-0 home win over Hearts, leaving them behind Hamilton on goals scored.
Champions Celtic are third on four points after being held 1-1 at Dundee United, while Kilmarnock are the only other unbeaten side after their 0-0 draw at St Mirren.
Motherwell, who lost 1-0 at home to Aberdeen, and Falkirk, beaten 3-2 at Hibernian, prop up the table with a point after two matches.
