(CNN) -- Swiss international central defender Philippe Senderos is joining AC Milan on a loan, subject to passing a medical on Tuesday.
Swiss international Senderos will be plying his trade in Serie A this season.
The 23-year-old will hook up again with former Gunner Mathieu Flamini at the San Siro after falling down the pecking order at the Emirates.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger confirmed the move, saying that "congestion" at his team's defense had prompted it.
"The thinking is that he does not get games here and (this way he) gets top-level games somewhere," Wenger said in London. "We have congestion in there and we want him to play without losing him."
After joining Arsenal in 2003, Senderos played 115 games without ever becoming an automatic choice.
Asked whether the 12-month loan would turn into a permanent deal, Wenger said: "It is not decided yet."
Milan finished a disappointing fifth in Serie A last season and were eliminated by Arsenal in the second round of the Champions League. This season, Milan will play in the second-tier UEFA Cup.
Senderos will join former Arsenal midfielder Mathieu Flamini at Milan after the arrival of versatile former Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre had further limited his opportunities.
In other transfer developments on Tuesday, Everton completed their first signing of the summer by acquiring Denmark right-back Lars Jacobsen on a free transfer.
Jacobsen, 28, who was with German club Nurnberg last season, has agreed a one-year deal.
He will be available for Saturday's Premier League clash with Portsmouth and will provide much needed squad cover for Everton manager David Moyes who admitted at the weekend he needed to make signings.
Sunderland were expecting to complete the signing of defender Anton Ferdinand from fellow Premier League club West Ham after the player arrived for a medical.
Manager Roy Keane said. "I met him last week and it went well. He will be a good addition to our squad and it will keep people on their toes."
Ferdinand, the brother of Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand, would be Sunderland's ninth signing since they finished 15th last season.
Keane said he would like to take the number of acquisitions to 10 before the transfer window closes on Monday.
"I will be delighted if I can get him (Ferdinand) and another one, and then we can concentrate on the season," Keane said.
The 23-year-old Ferdinand has never played for another club, making 163 appearances and scoring five goals since his Hammers debut in August 2003.
