(CNN) -- Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick is facing up to six weeks on the sidelines after breaking a bone in his foot during the 2-1 defeat at Liverpool on Saturday.
England midfielder Carrick broke a bone in his foot during the 2-1 defeat at Liverpool on Saturday.
The England international left Anfield on crutches and although Sir Alex Ferguson initially felt the damage was not too bad, scans have revealed a small break.
Carrick will be out for at least a month -- and possibly longer -- ruling him out of England's next two World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Belarus, plus up to nine matches for United.
In addition, United's record signing Dimitar Berbatov is a major doubt for Wednesday's Champions League opener against Villarreal at Old Trafford after suffering a knee injury in the defeat on Merseyside.
Wes Brown (knee) should be okay, while Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to be on the bench as he makes his long-awaited comeback from ankle surgery. Paul Scholes is suspended and misses out.
