(CNN) -- Cristiano Ronaldo's return failed to inspire Manchester United as their record of 12 successive Champions League home wins came to an end with a frustrating 0-0 draw against Villarreal in Group E.

Ronaldo made his return to the Manchester United side, but could not inspire them to defeat Villarreal.

United enjoyed the best chances, and Park Ji Sung had two penalty claims denied, but the Spanish side hung on for a deserved point.

Young defender Jonny Evans came closest for United, heading against the post, while Villarreal striker Guille Franco also struck the woodwork with an audacious flick.

United were the better of the two sides throughout, but found the Villarreal defence in stubborn mood.

Their best chances fell in the second half, with Evans heading wide and Carlos Tevez's bouncing shot cleared off the line by Gonzalo Rodriguez.

Villarreal's only real chance came when Angel Lopez crossed for Franco. The striker flicked the ball goalwards with the back of his heel and watched in agony as it bounced back of the post with a grateful Edwin Van der Sar gathering the rebound.

Evans then headed against the post from close-range, but the introduction of substitute Ronaldo midway through the second half brought the biggest cheer of the evening.

Meanwhile, in the group's other match, Barry Robson missed a first-half penalty as Celtic also drew a blank in their 0-0 opener against Danish minnows Aalborg.

The home side huffed and puffed against their unfancied opponents and were awarded a spot-kick in the 29th minute when midfielder Shaun Maloney was tripped by Steve Olfers inside the penalty box.

But Robson stepped up to blast his shot against the legs of Karim Zaza and although Aalborg defender Michael Beauchamp was sent off with 10 minutes to go in an apparent case of mistaken identity, the Scottish champions could not find a way past a determined visiting defence.
