(CNN) -- Last season's beaten Carling Cup finalists Chelsea brushed aside the challenge of Portsmouth with a 4-0 win at Fratton Park to reach the last 16 of this year's competition.
Frank Lampard netted twice to help Chelsea cruise into the fourth round of the Carling Cup.
The defeat made it 10 goals conceded in two games for the FA Cup holders following their 6-0 defeat by Manchester City at the weekend.
Frank Lampard opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 36th minute after Nadir Belhadj fouled Michael Ballack in the area.
Florent Malouda made it two on the stroke of half-time and Lampard was gifted his second goal when England keeper David James punched the ball against him in front of goal early in the second-half.
Salomon Kalou then profited from another error, this time from Sylvain Distin, to secure Chelsea's passage into the next round.
Meanwhile, holders Tottenham claimed their first domestic victory of the season to reach the fourth round with a 2-1 win at Newcastle, heaping more misery on the managerless Magpies.
The clubs are stuck together at the bottom of the Premier League table, but it was Tottenham who gained a morale-boosting victory, thanks to a header from Roman Pavlyuchenko -- his first goal for the club -- and Jamie O'Hara's confident finish following an error in the home defence.
Michael Owen pulled a goal back in the final minute but it was not enough as the visitors held on for victory.
Premier League side Wigan got the better of Championship opposition with a thumping 4-1 away success at Ipswich.
Lee Cattermole reacted first to turn in a rebound for a 52nd-minute opener before Jonathan Walters volleyed in the equalizer for the home side.
But the hosts were only level for a minute as Amr Zaki's mis-hit volley fell to Olivier Kapo and the Egyptian was the provider again as Paul Scharner made it 3-1 before Henri Camara sealed matters in injury time.
Wednesday's shocks were provided by Queens Park Rangers and Brighton, who both knocked out Premier League clubs.
QPR dumped five-times winners Aston Villa out of the competition as Damion Stewart headed the only goal from Daniel Parejo's cross in a 1-0 victory at Villa Park.
However, the biggest surprise of the night was at Division One side Brighton, who dumped mega-rich Manchester City out 5-3 on penalties, after the sides finished level at 2-2 after 120 minutes.
City left-back Michael Ball missed the decisive spot-kick for the Premier League side, who rested a number of key players for the tie.
