(CNN) -- Jermain Defoe scored a first-half penalty against his former club before Peter Crouch added a second, as Portmouth beat Tottenham 2-0 to leave Juande Ramos' hapless side rooted to the bottom of the English Premier League.

Defoe (left) refuses to celebrate in front of the Tottenham fans after Portsmouth's 2-0 Fratton Park win.

After gaining just two points from their opening six matches, Ramos was subjected to chants of "You don't know what you are doing" from fans after he took 73 minutes to send on top-scorer Darren Bent for lone striker Roman Pavlyuchenko.

But for Pompey it was a welcome return to winning ways having conceded 10 goals in their previous two matches, although the victory was tarnished when Lassana Diarra was sent off after a second yellow card foul on fellow-Frenchman Benoit Assou-Ekotto two minutes from time.

Defoe was on a mission from the start to prove a point to the club which sold him to Pompey in January. Having been pulled up by an offside flag after just two minutes when he swept home Crouch's through-pass, the England striker then went on a one-man crusade.

His 34th-minute penalty, awarded for handball by stand-in Tottenham captain Jermaine Jenas, must have felt sweet -- although but he chose not to celebrate in front of the Tottenham fans packed behind the goal.

The visitors had worked their way back into the game after Defoe's opener but were finished off when Armand Traore, on loan from Arsenal, hit a thunderous shot which goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes parried -- only for Crouch to head home his first Fratton Park goal since his summer move from Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Portsmouth have confirmed they will consider an offer for the club, while insisting they are not searching for a buyer.

The FA Cup winner issued a statement on Sunday only partially refuting reports that Russian businessman Alexander Gaydamak is looking to sell the club he bought in 2006 due to financial woes.

"The press seems determined to speculate on the sale of a number of clubs in the Premier League and have now turned their attention to Portsmouth," the statement read.

"The club's owner has already stated that the club is not for sale but, as with all businesses, should the right offer be forthcoming serious consideration would be given to the proposal.

"The financial position of the club is fully audited and is consistent with its peers in the football industry. The club's growth and performance over the last two-and- a-half years is evidence of how well the club is managed," the statement added.

Meanwhile, Manchester City's multi-million pound revolution took another setback after Wigan claimed a narrow 2-1 home victory in the other Premier League clash on Sunday.

City struggled to break down organised Wigan, despite including the expensive talents of British record signing Robinho in their side, along with big-money recruits Jo and Vincent Kompany.

Lower-league Brighton had knocked City out of the Carling Cup in midweek and it was City manager Mark Hughes' former Manchester United team-mate Steve Bruce who inflicted more pain, as his Wigan side ran-out worthy winners.

Antonio Valencia had given Wigan the lead with a spectacular 16th-minute opening goal from long-range, but Kompany's close-range finish from Elano's free-kick five minutes later pulled the visitors level.

However, Wigan claimed the three points from the penalty spot after Javier Garrido was deemed to have fouled Wilson Palacios inside the box.

Egyptian striker Amr Zaki took the resulting spot-kick and confidently sent Joe Hart the wrong way with a placed-effort to seal the win with his fifth goal of the season.
