LONDON, England (CNN) -- With two victories in a week -- one of which a confident and powerful display, one a dramatic and well-earned comeback -- Liverpool have managed to continue their great start to the season.

Liverpool have had a great start to the season, and crafted a great comeback away to Manchester City.

Though counted as one of the Premier League's elite top four clubs, and with perhaps the most impressive record in English football, the Reds haven't won the domestic league since 1990.

Manager Rafa Benitez has come under media criticism for his inability to beat the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal to the top spot over the last few years. And, although he led the team to success in Europe in 2005, the club's furiously loyal fans are starting to demand some success at home.

The season so far has already bolstered spirits at Anfield, as the team have emerged unbeaten from seven league matches and two Champions League ties. But it wasn't until this past week that people started to tout them as possible league winners.

After a comfortable 3-1 home victory against the always tricky PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League last week -- a match that saw recent signing Robbie Keane score his first goal for the club -- the team were given even more of a challenge courtesy of the richest club in the world, Manchester City.

City, who were taken over by an Arab consortium at the end of the summer, have had an inconsistent past few weeks, losing to Wigan and Championship side Brighton, but humbling fellow UEFA Cup team Portsmouth 6-0.

Either way, with a squad that boasts England internationals Micah Richards and Shaun Wright-Philips, and of course the £34 million ($59 million) Brazilian signing Robinho, they are not a club to be underestimated.

And, at the weekend City demonstrated this as they all-but put the game out of reach of the visiting Liverpool, scoring twice and narrowly missing the opportunity to make it 3-0 at the break.

However, coming out in the second half, the Reds had their tails up and did their bit to craft one of the most exciting 45-minute periods of football in the season so far.

Two goals from the team's Spanish star Fernando Torres and a 92nd minute winner from the previously goal-deprived Dirk Kuyt gave the team a fantastic result, a boost in confidence and a valuable three points.

If there was one thing at the City of Manchester Stadium fixture that threatened to ruin Liverpool's great week it was an injury blow to the rock solid defender Martin Skrtel.

The 23-year-old, who is a key feature in the team's central defense, suffered posterior cruciate ligament damage to his right knee, which can be a very serious injury, and he was thought to be out for much of the rest of the season.

But the cherry on the top of a great week for the Reds came Wednesday, when the club announced that Skrtel's leg wouldn't require surgery and that he may be back in the side by Christmas.

It seems even injuries can't pose too much of a threat to the club's rampant start, and that, provided the ever-patient Agger can slot into the impressive Liverpool defense, and maintain the high standard at least for the next two and half months, the team should be able to continue their run.

Considering they now sit in second place in the Premier League -- only goal difference separates them from leaders Chelsea -- and they are having one of their best starts to a season since the turn of the millennium, Liverpool may be real contenders for some of the big prizes this season, and perhaps that elusive Premier League title.
