(CNN) -- England coach Fabio Capello has confirmed that John Terry has been ruled out of Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan at Wembley.
England captain Terry will miss the qualifier against Kazakhstan because of a back injury.
The England captain had been a doubt for the game with a back complaint which had prevented him from training. Rio Ferdinand will take the captain's armband in Terry's absence.
Terry suffered a recurrence of his back injury in Chelsea's Champions League tie against CFR Cluj last week and required more treatment in the Premier League match against Aston Villa on Sunday. He did not train with England on Tuesday and also had to sit out on Thursday after failing to complete Wednesday's session.
Matthew Upson, Joleon Lescott and Wes Brown are all in contention to deputise at center-back for Terry, with England looking to build on their famous 4-1 win in Croatia that put them in control of Group Six.
"We have 23 players so I am certain one of the substitutes will be able to replace John," said Capello. "I'm happy about the performance against Croatia but it was only three points. We have to win again."
When asked if the Chelsea captain would be fit for the Belarus match on Wednesday, the Italian continued: "I don't know, it depends on his back, if he can train a bit the day after tomorrow."
Arsenal forward Theo Walcott is set to retain his place on the right after scoring a memorable hat-trick against Croatia, while Capello is expected to pair Emile Heskey and Wayne Rooney in attack.
